International conference on hybridization Print

2 - 3 and 4 November an international conference "Hybridization between wild and domestic mammals as a conservation threat and opportunity" will take place at hotel Granduca, Grosseto. Info on

The title is: "Hybridization between wild and domestic mammals as a conservation threat and opportunity".

Anthropogenic hybridization is a serious threat to the conservation of many wild species in Italy and many other countries. Well known examples are the hybridization dog-wolf in Italy, domestic cat-wild cat in Scotland, American bison-cattle in USA etc. The management of this threat is often very difficult as it involves tackling complicated biological, ethical, political and technical aspects.

The conference will offer the opportunity to explore and discuss, with the participation of several international experts, all aspects of the study and management of anthropogenic hybridization. In particular, the conference will focus on the most recent developments in the techniques to detect  hybridization and introgression in wild populations, on defining hybrids based on morphological and genetic features, and on discussing management approaches under various scenarios of hybridization prevalence.

The conference is organized by the LIFE Project Ibriwolf ( Scientific responsibility: Luigi Boitani and Paolo Ciucci, Department of Biology and Biotechnologies, Sapienza Rome University.

Important! The first session of the conference is open to the public (November 2 and 3). The second session (November 4) will be a roundtable only for the invited speakers, not open to the public.
