Excursion with Canadian canoes

Silva Cooperative (Cooperativa Silva) organises, in collaboration with the Park of Maremma, a guided excursion of two hours and half with canadian canoes

The embarking point for the canoe trip is in La Barca location, near Alberese. This is a stretch of the river which, up to forty years ago, was travelled by ferry. The banks are initially covered by a thick vegetation of poplars, alders, elms, and willows, while, going down near the artificial bank, the vegetation is low and spread out. Further up, near Spolverino, there are the ruins of an old roman bridge, called Devil’s Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo).

Along the banks, cormorants can be seen on dry eucalyptus plants which had been planted during the reclamation of the marshes. At Trappola Tower, around three kilometres away from the sea, the river gets bigger, its banks become lower and the typical riparious vegetation changes completely. Poplars and willows are replaced by bushes of lentiscus and tamarisk. The land is mainly covered with salicornia, almost completely submersed in winter and dry in summer, which are used by maremman cattle to graze freely. Reeds and tamarisks, which cover the banks, can be seen by getting nearer and nearer to the sea.

The canadian canoes are stabilized canoes, unsinkable. They have been built to give hospitality to not experienced people, children and people who aren't able to swim. It isn't compulsory to dress particular clothes, only confortable clothes and right for different seasons.
